DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Chemistry plays an integral role in today's scientific endeavours. Science has become increasingly interdisciplinary and fundamental scientific problems focus mostly on the chemical nature of matter. Hence the study of Chemistry becomes essential and occupies a unique position in almost all branches of science. The Department of Chemistry provides a conducive environment for students coming from varying backgrounds to explore and learn Chemistry through our Academic Curriculum.
About the Department:
The Department of Chemistry was started in the Academic Year 1980-81 for handling Chemistry Ancillary papers (theory & practical) for B.Sc. Zoology (Main) students of Dr. S.R.K. Govt. Arts College. At that time, the College was affiliated to Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. In the Academic Year 1984-85, the Government of Puducherry decided to introduce the B.Sc. Chemistry (Main) Course in this institution with an initial sanctioned strength of 12 students and affiliated it to Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Later, with effect from the Academic Year 1986-87, the course was affiliated to Pondicherry University and the sanctioned strength was subsequently enhanced from 12 to 16, and currently the sanctioned strength of the Department is 30 from the Academic year 2017-18, to meet the increasing demand for the Course. In the Academic Year 2019-20, the Government of Puducherry has introduced M.Sc. Chemistry Course in this Institution with an initial sanction strength of 18 students and affiliated to Pondicherry University. The products of this Department are well placed in the fields of R&D, Industry as well as in Academic positions. Some of them have been University Examination Toppers and secured Gold Medals.
The Department is in serene surroundings within the College campus. The Department is equipped with a Staff room, two Laboratories and two Lecture Halls. The Laboratory houses two storerooms, a preparation room and a balance room. In addition to the above and in view of the recently implemented revised UGC Curriculum, an Instrumentation Laboratory was set up in the Department.
RUSA grant of Rs.1.25 Crores was utilized in the year 2017 - 18 for the construction of New Academic Block for the M.Sc Chemistry Course.
The Departmental Library consists of nearly 571 Reference and Textbooks to cater to the needs of Staff and Students of the Department. The Personal Computers procured by the Department with UGC Grants enables the Staff and Students to utilize Software Packages like Chem Sketch and Chem Draw for drawing and visualizing molecules in three dimensions as well. Several Atomic and Molecular Models, Unit Cell Models, Wall Charts, etc., are being used as Teaching Aids.
The Department is also equipped with Instruments like, a Muffle Furnace, Electronic Balances, Single Pan Balance, Electrical Burners, Heating Mantles, Conductivity Meters, Digital pH Meters, Potentiometers, Colorimeters, Visible Spectrophotometer, and an Ion-Exchange Resin based De-Ionizer (for producing de-ionized water).
Vision:
- To impart High Quality of Chemistry Knowledge from Fundamental Concepts to Advanced Level in Both Theory and Practicals to nurture the students from rural background & to make them Competitive for the jobs in Academics, Industry & Research.?
